In my previous blog post, I focused on the “inward” path of apprehending the Real, the Self; and I described the epitome of this path: Ramana Maharshi’s Self-inquiry.
Advaita Vedanta, and its poor sister, neo-Advaita Vedanta, principally concern themselves with the “problem” of Identity, of finding out Who or What one is. And to this end, they recommend an inward, or inner, search for the true, transcendental “I,” the Self.
In addition to the inward search, Advaita Vedanta emphasizes that you are not your body or mind; you are pure, silent, still Consciousness. So this “inward” path of the jnanis emphasizes disidentifying from the psycho-physical you, so you can realize the true, or transcendental “You.”
The “asward” path of the mystics stands in direct contrast to the “inward” path of the jnanis. The “asward” path assumes that you are the body-mind, and that by being consciously present as the body-mind, you can realize the Condition (Divine Consciousness-Energy) of all conditions (manifestations), including your body-mind. This path aims at establishing the conditional you, your body-mind complex, in the unconditioned, plenary Real, Siva-Shakti, until you merge with It and realize It as your Divine Self.
From the radical (or gone-to-the root) “asward” perspective, you don’t have to invert your attention to “locate” divine Being. When you are unobstuctedly whole-bodily present, and your consciousness, or soul, is fused with the Spirit, or Shakti, then Sat-Chit-Ananda stands out and shines as the Condition of all conditions, including your body-mind. Instead of seeking the Self in the Heart-center, you are radiating as the Self, or Heart, doing Its “function” as a “Divine Agent.”
The “asward asana” of being whole-bodily present to existence is not only ideal for practicing relational-enquiry (the inquiry: “Avoiding relationship?”), it is also ideal for practicing Ramana Maharshi’s Self-inquiry: (the inquiry: “Who am I?”). I speak of this from personal experience.
So whether you seek to be present as the Divine Self by uniting your consciousness with Shakti, or whether you seek the Self within, begin your practice by assuming the “asward asana.”

Dear Ron, OM Teacher,
do I understand it correctly that the “asward” path can be understood as indirect “inward” path? By penetrating three-dimensional empty space with our individual awareness we go deep into other spaces behind or inside three-dimensional space, at the end we transcend any space and reach that “place”, which is also our innermost core, the true Self of all. So by going “asward” we are simultaneously and indirectly going inward and reach the same goal?!
Please could you elaborate, why empty space in front of (and/or around) us is a portal to the Divine? How does it work, technically spoken? Does feeling the space inside the body, maybe with an awareness enhanced by pore-breathing, accomplish the same?
Which practice would you recommend for the time, which we spend sleeping (yoga nidra) and during the day, when not meditating?

Viennabuddha, yes, an “asward path,” such as Dzogchen, can be viewed as an “indirect, inward path.” An “asward path” is one of being while-bodily present to existence, what arises, while not grasping or rejecting thought-forms. . It can be practiced with one’s eyes open or closed.
Empty space provides a useful object, or background, to focus on, or “plug into,” to help one maintain the asana of relationship, of being directly present. Once this empty space comes alive as Shakti, then one should alternate receiving it with feeling-uniting with it, and with periodically totally letting go of all effort.
Empty space works as a portal because it serves to open, or de-contract, or ‘expand” one’s consciousness, and free it from contracting thought-forms. Spirit is formless, and whole-bodily focusing on formless space is an integral asana for connecting to Shakti, the Holy Spirit, or Sambhogakaya.
I don’t practice anything while I sleep, so I don’t have any recommendations for this state. The asward path can be practiced during ordinary daily activity. It is simply being consciously present. And if this obstructs the work you’re doing, then just practice the “poverty pole” of effortlessness, or letting go and letting be.
Hi Ron, just caught up with your last couple posts today. I think I grasp, at least on the level of language, what you’re trying to say regarding the differences between the inward and “asward” approaches to perception of reality. I agree with viennabuddha, and suspect that these different approaches converge at some point along the way.
Back to focusing on chakras. I think it is relevant here. It is my hunch that those who follow an asward approach still make use of chakras, even if they aren’t aware they are doing so. My understanding is that chakras are more than subtle points to focus on–they are portals to a whole new way of perceiving reality. Perhaps one can tap into a chakra either by focusing directly on its position within the body, or by creating the conditions necessary to allow consciousness to drift in that direction? Maybe the latter is what viennabuddha meant by “indirect inward” approach.
Sorry if I’m just repeating what has already been said. Sometimes I am dense.

Ron is of course absolutely correct, when he says that there are systems, which do not even mention chakras. To awaken kundalini shakti by pulling in Divine Shakti is a very smart method. One should never forcefully awaken kundalini.
Nevertheless, having studied many books, I come to the conclusion that all chakras are centers of awareness and energy in different degrees (Choa Kok Sui, Paramahamsa Yogananda, Daskalos, Genevieve L. Paulson), not only parts of the pranamaya kosha. The higher the chakra, the subtler the awreness and the energy is. I work also with my chakras as a subsidiary practice to Divine Yoga.
Sri Aurobindo teaches meditation especially on the chakra above the crown and recommends meditation on the heart chakra only at the beginning. He also teaches a “Psychic Being” in the region of the heart, this perfectly matches the astral matrix that Ron teaches to have its seat in the Hridayam.
Focusing on the chakra above the head is an inward path, because you detach from everything else and want to penetrate deeper, being whole-bodily aware of the space in front or around the body is asward, because you include your body-mind during penetrating space to find the Absolute.

Thanks for your thoughts. After encountering guys like Aurobindo, Ramana Maharshi, as well as the hesychast literature, I have to admit that I think the most essential thing to spiritual life is to discover what the latter tradition refers to as “the place of the heart.” I think all these traditions point to the primacy of the spiritual heart, beyond all focus on particular states of awareness or experiences. That being said, I suspect it takes a lot of purification to awaken to this level, and that chakra work can help the process in some way. May I ask how it is that you work with your chakras? My own chakra practice is a method of spinal breathing involving ujjayi pranayama and tracing the sushumna from root to third eye, sometimes with the traditional bija mantras, mudras, bhandas and occasional kumbhaka. This method of awakening kundalini is not what I would call forceful, unless one overdoes the kumbhaka. In fact it is very relaxing and I have noticed a steady increase in energy experience with this method. I’ve been using it for a year or so. I’m curious what benefits you may have noticed from chakra work.

for some time I also followed the AYP-teachings and did kriya-pranayama in the line of Paramahamsa Yogananda and Roy Eugene Davis. There are many possibilities to work with the chakras. Ron’s teaching is for me the umbrella, under which I integrate everything else. I did bija-mantras, spinal breathing pranayama from bottom to crown. Swami Khecaranatha has developed some powerful methods to work with the chakras.

A question I have, perhaps you have some thoughts: is the intention to “find the Absolute” really any different from absolute letting go, or detachment? I personally suspect that if one “lets go” amidst all experiences and particular states of awareness, one does eventually arrive at the Absolute, which itself is not an experience or any particular state of awareness.

Tom, my position is that there is nothing spiritual about chakras; they are simply pranic knots in the subtle body. Many spiritual traditions, such as Zen and Christian mysticism, don’t even mention them.
Fair enough, Ron. I am not awakened enough to speak from personal experience on this anyway. It’s just that many on the “inward” path say there is great significance when one opens the third eye and crown chakras. And the heart center holds special spiritual significance for Aurobindo, Ramana Maharshi and certainly the hesychasts.
In any case, we all have to find out for ourselves and we each have our own unique paths. Carry on!
Tom, I don’t consider the Heart-center (Hridayam) a chakra. The heart chakra is the anahata chakra in the sushumna. The third eye and crown hold special significance because when they are open, the brain is freely irradiated by Light-energy.

Practicing Divine Meditation I come to the conclusion that it is not the direction of one’s individual awareness (in the sense of an unqualified presence to something) that separates the inward from the asward path: The difference lies in taking the body/mind with me or detaching from it. I mean when I am simultaneously aware of my body, my thoughts, sense-data and when I then penetrate this awarenss itself to find absolute Awareness, Shiva, but let a portion of my awareness on the body, the mind and the sense-data, then it is inward and asward at the same time. So in that sense these two techniques cannot be separated from each other.
Please, is my understanding correct?

Viennabuddha, I’m not fully clear on your question. Divine meditation is simply connecting the “vine” of your individual consciousness with the “vine” of universal Spirit, palpable radiant Power. Focusing on one’s body or on empty space is just a doorway to the Spirit, or Shakti. Once one receives this Spirit Power and relates to it unobstructedly (which unites one’s consciousness with this Power), one spontaneously experiences divine Being (and the divine Feeling of Being), because divine Being is consciousness-Power. For this awakening to divine Being to happen, the Shakti must penetrate to one’s Heart-center (the Hridayam), wherefrom one’s consciousness arises.
Your consciousness, or awareness, must be en-Light-ened and “expanded.” Only Spirit, the Bright-Energy, can do this. To awaken this Bright-Energy, practice direct, immediate relationship to the now; and the most helpful way to plug into the now is to first be in direct conscious relationship to the empty space in front of you. When the empty space comes alive as Spirit Power, the now has become the Now, and you can channel and unite with the Power of Now, the Holy Spirit, or Divine Shakti.
Viennabuddha, the “inward” method of Self-enquiry is different than the Plugged-in Presence, or Dzogchen, or Holy Communion, and can be separated from it. Practice both methods and see for yourself. But Self-enquiry works best when one first assumes an “asward” “self-possessed” posture. In other words, first be whole-bodily present, and then enquire.
