No two meditation sessions are the same. Whether a particular session is good, bad, or just plain “ugly” (meaning extremely disconcerting), it is always unique. Part of the fun of meditation is not knowing what you’re going to get when you sit down to begin a session.
There is no cast-in-stone way to begin a session. But a good way is to start from the most “yin” pole. For five minutes or so, simply, utterly relax-release your bodymind. Be as if dead, meaning effortless and empty.
Usually within five or fewer minutes, the letting go begins to become oppressive. When it does, shift to the “yang” pole. Do this by practicing focused presence + oneness (meaning communion) rather than unfocused absence + letting go. Be directly, immediately whole-bodily present to, and “plugged into,” the empty space in front of you. Feel yourself, as the whole body, pressing against the empty space. Whenever you become aware that you have retracted from conscious at-one-ment with the empty space, reestablish the connection. If you use an enquiry (I use “Avoiding relationship?”), apply it randomly to help instigate the reconnection.
If you’re an “initiated,” or “baptized,” practitioner who has awakened the Shakti and can connect to it, your communion practice (in at least some of your meditation sessions) will enable the emptiness to morph into palpable Energy, a living, visceral Force-flow. When it does, you can either directly commune with it, so as to “become one with it,” or simply be an open vessel and receive its Force-flow, thereby allowing it to divinize, or en-Light-en, you.
If you haven’t awakened Shakti (or are unable to access it in a particular session), you can instead “focus” on your mind. When thoughts arise, you can simply “notice” them, which will tend to make them dissolve. Or you can “neither accept nor reject” thoughts as they arise, which will also tend to make them dissolve.

When I try to merge with it occasionally I experience what seems like white light shinning down from above my head through the front of my head or face. The bliss that emanates from my heart center is sporadic and before I know it I’m avoiding relationship again. I’m really starting to Grok you and Adi Da regarding what relationship I am avoiding. I’ve taken your recommendations seriously and read the books suggested and they have changed my body and awareness a great deal, especially those on Prakriti, Paleo Diet, and Food Combining. I don’t watch TV when I eat now, instead I listen to inspirational music and practice reverence for the living things I consume. So, what I’m saying to those of us beginners is please be patient, faithful and obedient. Enlightenment is a gift of grace not something we can think our way through or earn. I have no idea of when I will completely stop trying to “become” and just “be”. I do know that my suffering has diminished and my Salvation is connected to not ‘avoiding relationship’.
